08/03/13: Hurraw! Black Cherry Tinted Balm

Hurraw! is a company making raw lip balms.  Not only raw, but vegan, organic, GMO free and non-toxic.  I bought this one, Black Cherry, one of their two tinted balms.  There is also an SPF balm - sadly the others are not SPF rated - and a whole range of different flavours/scents.  I'm interested in the Moon Balm, the Sun (SPF) balm and I think I saw a Grapefruit one.  In the future I want to try these out too.  It's very tempting to buy the whole lot!  See their range here: - so cute!

Hurraw Lip Balm
(Apologies for the quality of my webcam picture!)

A cute oval balm in a little stick form.  Simple but sweet.  I love the brand name, as it makes me smile. :) According to their website, the plastic is plastic #5 (I hadn't a clue that there were numbers for plastics) and although this one can be harder to recycle, it can be recycled.  I will have to investigate as to whether my local council would accept this - it's not quite covered on my green bin sticker.

The oval shape makes it really simple to apply, fitting nicely into the bow of your lips and the corners.  Also, it just looks cool!  The balm itself feels really smooth, soft and swooshes gently across your lips.  After applying, I spent quite a while just rubbing my lips together because it felt so nice.  It appears really red in the tube, but it applies sheer.

The colour is subtle, but effective.  Red, but not in your face. I'd be interested to see what the Cinnamon balm (the lighter tinted balm Hurraw! offer) looks like in comparison.  There was a review on the internet comparing the two but it's just showing a 404 error now. (Sad face).  Anyone got them both?

As you can see from the hand swatch, you can build it up quite nicely.  The middle picture is just bare lips, and the bottom is Black Cherry-fied lips.  On the hand, the left is just one swipe, the right is three to four. However, you still don't end up with a thick goop when you do this on your lips - it settles in very nicely, and leaves a nice shade.  It's just a slightly darker shade of my original lip colour, which is perfect for me.  The lasting power is average, but I wasn't expecting anything else .  I enjoy re-applying, so this isn't an issue.

Good for me?
Lovely subtle colour, with soft lips and a cute package.  Plus, it was only £3.45 with free postage at the moment from a lovely place called The Sho-Case!  They delivered quickly and you have the option of recycled packaging.  Excellent stuff.  Would I buy it again?  Yep -  I'm already planning my next purchase. :)
Good for you?
If you prefer a little more scent on your lips, this particular balm might be too subtle.   There's a hint of Cherry if you give it a good sniff, but nothing noticeable when it's applied.  I personally don't mind.

**Edit to add - I think I was nasally-deficient at the time of posting, or maybe my use of the product has unleashed the scent, but I can definitely smell the cherry now!  Not overpowering or sickly, but just right.**

The  Italics are the ingredients listed on the back of the stick.  The information following is taken from Hurraw!'s website.

Alkanna tinctoria (alkanet) infused *Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil:  Our 100% natural almond oil is pressed in California at a family-run mill from raw almond kernels.  It comes direct to us right after pressing, allowing it to be super fresh and exceptionally rich in nourishing fatty acids.  Great for your lips; almond oil moisturizes, softens, soothes, and re-conditions them superbly.

***Euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax:  We use a very high quality candelilla wax that is sustainably wildcrafted from candelilla plants in Mexico. We combine this fabulous wax with our raw / cold pressed oils and butters to provide an excellent long lasting protective shield for your lips.

**Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil:  We use a raw, organic, fair trade coconut oil direct from Mexico (less travel=less pollution) that has been extracted using a centrifuged method. This method gently separates fresh coconuts and allows a pure raw oil to be obtained. The result is amazing. Coconut oil is a fabulous moisturizer, a great free radical buster and super soothing for chronic lip inflammation.

*Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil:  Our organic jojoba oil is obtained farmer direct after being cold pressed in Arizona from simmondsia chinensis beans and is actually a "liquid wax." Jojoba oil's properties are very similar to our skin's own, allowing it to be a deeply absorbed, wonderful moisturizer for the lips.

**Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter:  Our natural sourced, equitable trade cacao butter is pressed from the organic raw seeds of the cacao tree. Our rich, certified raw butter comes direct to us from small farmer owned lands in Bali. It will nourish, soften, soothe and moisturize your lips.  Cacao butter not only improves skin elasticity but smells oh so divine.

*Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil:  A natural emollient from India, our organic, cold pressed, hexane free castor oil makes an excellent protective barrier against harsh conditions. Anti-inflammatory, healing, very soothing and deeply absorbed, it will help your lips stay soft and supple

*Olea europaea (olive) fruit oil:  Cold pressed from a fruit and used for over 5000 doubt olive oil is amazing!  Our Californian grown olive oil is rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and E; natural squalene properties moisturize, repair and protect your lips.

Organic flavors: All of the flavors we use in our balms are derived from 100% natural sources. Most come from pure essential oils, the others (Rootbeer, Chai Spice, Chocolate, Green Tea, Black Cherry) are made for us from 100% natural, organically derived flavor compounds through various processes of distillation and extraction.

Tocopherols (vitamin e):  Couldn't see a description for this one.

*cold pressed / organic **raw & organic ***wildcrafted

  1. Hi there! :D Nice to see your blog, and your posts.
I used to own this Hurraw! Cherry Tinted Lip Balm, but it's already empty. I love is. Especially from the scent side (so cherry!), and it gives a little red/pink thin gloss on lips. Lovely! :D The best part of it is the vegan thing. Lip products without beeswax is waay better. :)
