28/07/13: Interview - Suzanne Speed (Eden Be Natural)

Hi everyone! I reviewed some products by Eden Be Natural recently, and was really impressed with the quality and thought that had gone into each product. So when I contacted them and they agreed to answer a few questions for me to share with you, I was pretty excited for the opportunity to hear more about the brand and the work that went into it from the person who started it all, Suzanne Speed. I hope you enjoy reading her answers as much as I did.

Hi Suzanne!  For anyone who hasn't heard of Eden Be Natural - please tell us a bit about you and your range.
Hello! Many thanks for the opportunity to tell you a little more about who we are and what we do. We are a family run business based in Lincolnshire and we have been producing our current range of skincare since 2010.

Before this time, I made soap and skincare for myself, family and friends for many years. I actually started making soap for my daughter Eden, who really did not want to use palm oil in her products due to the devastation it’s production caused to the rain forest and its Orang-utan population. Upon using the soaps regularly, I noticed her skin had cleared of eczema, and it was at this point I learnt how to make other products and the adult acne that had plagued me for years also started to clear up. It was the realisation that perhaps what was in my conventional skincare products was actually contributing to mine and my families skin problems.

So the brand has evolved into what it is today, pure, organic, natural, vegan, palm oil free, affordable skincare, beautifully designed and packaged. We think we have designed a brand which is totally effective and luxurious and a real treat to use. It’s rather pretty to look at too!

So what made you want to take the leap from making your own skincare to producing it for others?
As interest in what we were doing grew, I became increasingly aware of how many people had not made the connection between what they were putting on their skin and the skin problems they were experiencing. I really wanted to share what I had learnt and the experiences I had had with others. It is our mission here to spread the word that natural skincare is just as effective, (if not more so!) and as easy to use and attainable as mainstream products.

What was the first product you came up with?
I started out with soaps and the first soap I created was the Minty Heaven Bar, this soon became one of our most popular bars and remains a best seller today.

It's a gorgeous soap, I'm loving mine.  Which product is your personal favourite and why?
Hmmm, that’s a tricky one, I love them all for different reasons! But if I was pushed I would have to say Peaks and Valleys Moisturising cream, I love this one as I actually created it specifically for my skin type, which is prone to break outs and can be generally quite unruly but it is also starting to show those early signs of getting older! This cream is great if you have this skin type as it is specifically designed to treat spots and break outs whilst smoothing away those little fine lines! I also really love the name of this product :)

Why is making your range natural and vegan so important to you?
Natural is so important here at Eden Be Natural, my experience has been that I look and feel better using natural skincare, the environment benefits and it does not have the same detrimental effect on your wallet! Natural skincare can be affordable, and produce fantastic results! It also tends to last a long time as a little really does go a long way as we do not use any water in our creams, scrubs etc.. Natural also really does mean natural here. Our ingredients listings on our website are complete, no hidden chemicals or preservatives, no unpronounceable, unrecognisable words.

Part of our philosophy is to do no harm, to people, animals or the environment, we are a family of strict vegetarians, and so it was absolutely essential that our products were cruelty free, never tested on animals and free from any kind of animal ingredient. Our entire range is registered with the Vegan Society and we are really proud of that.

Your line is all about skincare, so what other brands end up in your make-up bag?
I do not wear a great deal of make up everyday, but when I do, at the moment I am really into Bare Faced Beauty, I love their mineral blushers and eye colours! They have a great range of colours without unnecessary ingredients and I also have some liquid foundation from Dr Hauschka.

One of the less well known ingredients you use is MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), something I only heard about recently. Could you tell us a bit more about what it?
Yes certainly, MSM is a nutritional form of sulphur, which is vital for the formation of cartilage, collagen, and keratin. MSM is formed naturally as a by product of algae growing in the oceans then this by product is then evaporated and returns back to earth in the rain and becomes highly concentrated in plants watered by rain such as pine bark, aloe, grasses etc. MSM is extracted from these plants and is totally natural and vegan.

I first discovered MSM a few years ago whilst researching pain relief for arthritic conditions and MSM was mentioned many times as drinking a dose of it each day is known to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Among many other uses, I have found it to be highly valuable in skincare, and it does seem to help with many skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, scars, a seemingly endless list! I found that by adding it to our Utopia moisturiser, it really helped with my troubled complexion - my skin looks fresher and more even when I use our Utopia moisturising cream, and it really does help to heal my skin of break outs and any dry skin or scars I may have at the time.

What would you recommend as a first purchase to anyone who hasn't tried Eden Be Natural?
We welcome customers to contact us at anytime to discuss which of our products may be most suitable for their own skin type and conditions, but if I was just to pick one product with which to introduce someone, it would have to be our best selling Lemon and Coconut Body Butter! This is suitable for all skin types and has been said to be the best moisturiser some of our customers have ever used! People seem to really love the scent of this butter also so yes it would have to be this.

What has been the hardest moment so far in Eden Be Natural?
It was really important for Eden Be Natural to be exactly right from the very start, it was vital that I really believed in our products and could validate what I was saying. So perhaps the hardest part was making sure our recipes were perfect and stayed true to our values and philosophy. This took time and perseverance but the end result and the response to our products has been fantastic so I guess it was worth the extra effort.

And finally, what has been your best/proudest moment so far in establishing Eden Be Natural?
Oooh that’s a tricky one,as I have really enjoyed the whole process, and the great part is there is so much more to do, lots more products being created and always ways to improve what we do. I think the best part is getting feedback from our customers telling us how much they enjoy our products and ultimately if we have improved a skin problem for them those are the best moments.

It has also been really great to be able to do everything ourselves. I have created and make all the products myself and I am lucky enough that my husband is a talented artist and designer so the creative design on the packaging has also been done by us so it is exactly as we wanted and shows our personalities quite well. Naming the brand after our daughter finishes it all off perfectly!

Many thanks, its been great to talk to you x

Stay tuned for Part II of my EBN review coming soon (if you haven't read Part I, you can find it here) and I hope you all enjoyed this little Q and A - thanks again to Suzanne for taking the time to answer my questions!
