22/10/13: Vegan Faces Sample Pack (Lips)

Vegan Faces was set up a few years ago when the founder Metala became aware of eczema sufferers (particularly children) having to forgo the enjoyment of having their face painted because of the risk of irritation. After searching around for something suitable and not suceeding, she decided to set up her own business making paints that could be used on children and adults alike with a reduced risk.  With the success of the no-beeswax no-lanolin paints, in 2012 Vegan Faces expanded into a cosmetic line - and this line is currently rolling out a new selection of lipsticks and eyeshadows.

I saw a sample pack of the new shades being offered on their facebook page, and as I had been eyeing up the brand for a while, jumped on the opportunity.  The sample pack I received contains all 9 new shades of lip colour and all 16 - yes, SIXTEEN! new eyeshadows for just £13.  Bargain + samples = happy me.  So, as there are so many, these are the lip colours to start with:

Within the nine shades it seems to me that there are three pink leaning colours, three red leaning and three brown/orange leaning.  I organised them like this when I first got them, but they don't display them in the same order on the website.

Top row: Purple Pansy, Orchid, Pink Rose
These three are my favourites of the nine:  Purple Pansy is a strong purple that can be built up from a relatively sheer colour/stain to a deep lip colour.  I like this colour but on me its a bit too strong, especially for everyday wear - this would be great for a night out.  Orchid is such a pretty colour, a muted pink nude colour that I would feel comfortable wearing in public.  Pink Rose was initially my favourite, but as it gets colder and darker, it seems like more of a summery light colour.  I do still like it, but will probably save it for when sunnier days come around.
Bottom row: Cinnamon, Russet Apple, Tiger Lily
Of the lot, the three brown/orange shades are my least favourite.  I do like the colours but they just don't suit me.  I also struggled to get even coverage with these, with the pigment not wanting to stay on parts of my lips but gathering in others.

Middle row: Poppy, Raspberry, Tulip
And finally the reds - I chose to put the Tulip shade in this ground because although the swatch doesn't show this very well although it is orange-y, there is a hint of pink that is picked up in the group shot.  I like these for bold lips, I think they would look great on pale skin and hopefully when my spots clear up a bit more I'll feel confident in wearing these colours.  The thin consistency of the lipstick means that you can just dot a light wash as opposed to an opaque layer.

Ingredients:  Ricinus Communis seed oil, Euphorbia Cerifera wax, Butyrospermum Parkii butter, Mica, Simmondsia Chinensis seed oil, Limnanthes Alba seed oil, Copernicia Cerifera  cera, Citrus Nobilis peel oil, Iron Oxides.

+ No Animal Testing, No Animal Ingredients, No Bismuth, No Beeswax, No Lanolin, No Chemicals, No Synthetics, No Preservatives, No Dye, No Perfumes, No Parabens, No Talc, No Micronised Minerals, No Lead.

Good for me?
A departure from my usual nudes or balms, but I like that they aren't as heavy or thick as other lipsticks I've tried - much lighter than the Benecos and Une.  There is a little bit of an issue with coverage sometimes being a bit here and there.  They don't say in the ingredients whether they are organic, but as their predecessors are, hopefully these are too.

Good for you?
Vegan faces is currently in the process of re-doing their website, and the sample packs (these colours plus the eyeshadows) will be soon available to everyone.  They also do a line of bright (vegan) face paints, their own range of vegan friendly brushes and a couple of body butters. Every page has a "What's in this?" button so that you can see exactly what is in the product you're interested in, but as you might have gathered from the name, it's all vegan (and registered with the Vegan Society)!

The pinks are my favourites, what are yours?

P.S Would you like more of the lip swatches (as on twitter) or do you prefer the arm swatches?
