18/03/14: A scrub-down smackdown!

There's a strong possibility that I'll be moving house soon, so I've started trying to look at areas of my room, working out where there are items that I can get rid of, or sort into groups.  One area is obviously my dresser, which has all the usual items as well as a few strays... one pink sock, a badge... and I've been tidying it up a bit this week.  In doing so, I realised that I have more than a few skin scrubs, so I thought I'd put them up against each other in... a product specific smackdown!

The only body scrub in the group, I've been using this in most baths for a few weeks now, and I feel like I've barely dented it.  It's a heavy exfoliator, so you wouldn't want to even think about putting it near your face, but those chunks of salt do wonders on arms and legs.  The lemon and black pepper scent is fantastic and while it lives up to the name Awaken it isn't overpowering.  I think in general it would work best in a shower, as you can dampen the skin, stop the water and then add the scrub without too much of the salt dissolving the in process.  In a bath the process requires a little more thought to make sure you don't dunk your freshly applied scrub straight into the hot tub.  However, I have been using it this way and I definitely feel that it's been great at removing all the dead skin.

Before I used it I was a bit wary of all the oil, as I have had experience with scrubs that leave a film afterward.  This one did leave a bit behind, but not to the extend that I minded - only enough to make my skin felt moisturised, not greasy - just make sure that the water is hot enough.   I don't think it will run out for a while, but I will consider repurchasing or trying the other scrub in the line when it does (Rosemary and Peppermint).

Balance Me Radiance Face Mask - (sample size) - £LIB
I bought this on a whim along with the Melvita mask a short while ago when I first discovered Latest In Beauty.  I like that the granules are fine, but there are still enough of them that I can feel them exfoliating without it being too hard.  It spreads quite easily, but it does have quite a plastic scent to it.  This might be exclusive to the mini sample size, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to repurchase.

Eve St. Agnes Bamboo Exfoliation Polish - (sample size) - SoukSouk RRP £8
I have only used this once or twice since receiving it in a SoukSouk box last year, and I'm not a huge fan.  The smell isn't to my taste and it feels a little bit too scratchy for me.  I remember reading somewhere that harsh exfoliants leave little scratches in your skin which let in bacteria and obviously damages it.  (I think maybe dannistokes said something about it?  It definitely stuck!) Ever since I've been less enamoured with scrubbing my face like a crazy woman and for me this feels just a little too harsh.

I've seen other Eve St. Agnes products around on other blogs, and it might be that there are better products in the line for me, but I haven't seen one that I've had to have so far.  However, if you'd like to try some or they're already a brand you enjoy they currently have 30% off online, so now is the perfect time to stock up. :)

Although you can see the beads in this mask, it doesn't feel particularly rough on the skin.  In terms of harshness I would place it as somewhere between the Balance Me mask and Anar Naturals Scrub.  I like that you can use this as a face mask as well, multi tasking items are always good for me.  Although so far this is the only Melvita product I've tried, on the basis of this I might be persuaded to give some of their other products a go.  A problem I have had with this though is that it doesn't spread very easily, so you might end up using more than you intended.  However, it does leave my face feeling soft and not raw so overall it's a contender for top spot.

Firstly, I just have to mention how much I love this packaging.  I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I really like this cover!  The contents have a distinctive smell that I'm struggling to describe off the top of my head, but it's not unpleasant... the almond and honey give a sweetness, but it's kept from being sickly with grapefruit and ginseng, which overall gives it just a simple clean lotion-y smell.

It features some less common ingredients such as chickpea, neem and grapefruit which makes it a more interesting purchase than your standard scrub.  The only issue I have with this product is that it doesn't feel particularly scrubby!  It's probably miles better to my skin because of it, but I do like to feel a little bit of exfoliating going on, and this feels more like a smooth cream.  I did actually contact the company to see whether this was normal, and apparently it is - the ground almonds provide a gentle stimulant to the skin.

In all honesty, I do miss the feeling of some grit when applying this scrub, as psychologically I just don't feel like it's doing much to my skin.  But, I'm prepared to accept that my skin does feel smooth and soft after I've used it, so perhaps good things are happening on a microscopic level.  I'm still intrigued by it and will continue to use it.

Are you a scrub fiend, or couldn't care less?  Let me know down below :)

  1. Interesting collection of scrubs, I'm not using scrubs at the moment, my skin is rebelling and I can't handle the rough even for the smooth ;-) The Anar Naturals scrub may be a good one for me

    1. Haha, it might be, yes - would love to know what you make of it!

  2. Beginning a minor obsession with scrubs as of late- I was never really about them until I started green beauty blogging! Recently had some great success with Splurge Skincare- their peppermint and almond scents are out of this world, and soooo nourishing for you skin.... I will have to check out Anar... sounds awesome! Kathryne @getunsullied :0)

    1. I'm obsessed with mint, and almond dr bronners has been on my purchase list for ages, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Will be having a look at Splurge - thanks for the tip! x

  3. Great post! I've tried a couple of Anar products recently and the ayurvedic scrub was next on my list of purchases so interesting to hear your thoughts x

    1. I think I saw your post on the eye cream? I was put off of some of the products because they have royal jelly in, but this one was up my street. If you try it out I'd be interested to hear what you make of it. x

  4. I love a good scrub! I wasn't keen on the Eve of St Agnes polish either, the smell and the texture put me off it does feel scratchy doesn't it! I like the sound of the Anar scrub, seems interesting!

    1. I wanted to like it, but I think I'll probably re-purpose it as a foot scrub! :)

  5. Great review!
I love way to improve skin appearance! I often to DY scrubs for the body. For the face, I will review soon a couple of products I ahve been using :-)

  6. I enjoyed reading this post - I've tried so many exfoliators and always find that they have different textures so it really is a case of trial and error with these things! Loving the sound of the Melvita one :) x

Evelyn @ We Were Raised By Wolves

    1. Definitely trial and error - I was lucky to have quite a few samples around. And reading this I've realised that I actually have another one laying around that I forgot to include, dang it! Thanks for stopping by :) x

  7. You definitely have a great bunch of products! I really want to try the Anar scrub now - just the scent alone sounds amazing, but the fact that it's gentle is also really appealing as sometimes my skin can get so red and irritated by a regular scrub x
