28/09/14: Kosmea Purifying Cleanser and Daily Facial Exfoliator

Kosmea was a brand I hadn't heard of until recently, but they've started popping up here and there, most notably perhaps on mypure.  They're an Australian brand that's actually been around since the early 90s with a focus on using rosehip in their products and making goodies with no mineral oils, artificial colours, fragrances, SLS or animal ingredients.  They also don't test on animals and the packaging is recyclable.  I've been using their cream cleanser and daily exfoliator and thought it was about time to let you know what my thoughts are. :)

Daily facial exfoliant (125g) RRP £29.95*
When I first sniffed this, it made me think of Neals Yard Seaweed Moisturiser.  It's a strong scented product, not ideal if you prefer soft and gentle.  I did like it to begin with in terms of smell, but then it started to be a little bit strong, and looking at the ingredients I think it's the chamomile flowers that don't agree with me. It's quite a gritty exfoliator, but is surprisingly gentle on the face.  I have used it a few more times, as the amount of scrub in it is effective and it feels nice on the skin... but it's not one I reach for everyday.

Purifying cream cleanser (150ml) RRP £22.95*
The cleanser, however, is something I have been picking up more often.  This cleanser comes in a substantial tube with easy-squeeze applicator, is very creamy looking and has that standard creamy scent.  I really like being able to use this on the go and use it if I don't feel like standing over a sink with my cloth and oils to get the days make up and grime off me face (I admit it, I don't always have the energy for a proper double cleanse tone and moisturise!).

It spreads easily across the skin and is pleasant to use.  I found it a little drying if used just on its own, but this can be rectified with a good serum and moisturiser to follow.  I always use toner after using this on my skin as there is the tendency for it not to come completely off, but this is generally the way my routine goes anyway.  It's been a very handy addition to my collection as recent weeks have been very hectic and stressful - I've been tired and sleepy and having the option of a quick cream cleanse was great.

Good for me?
Sorta.  I'm in two minds over them.  I want to be able to say I liked them both, but I just had a scent reaction to the exfoliator.  In terms of the price point, by the time of writing this I couldn't remember how much they retailed for - and when I saw the RRPs I was actually quite surprised as personally, although they were decent enough products I would probably want to pay slightly less for them (perhaps me just being cheap??)  On the plus side though the packaging is hugely functional - great for anyone who is as haphazard and clumsy with beautiful glass pots and bottles as I am - they are substantial size packages and the ingredient lists are full of good stuff like Rose Hip, Calendula, Avocado Oil and Jojoba.  I also really liked that the daily exfoliant came with a little sample sachet of the cleanser, so that you could try it before buying if you only chose the exfoliator.  Smart marketing, people! :)

Good for you?
I think a lot of people would get on well with these products as they are decent items, I just didn't have much luck with them in the end (see edit below) and they wouldn't be worth me repurchasing.  If you're someone that prefers a cream cleanse to an oil and have oilier skin then I would definitely consider this one, and the exfoliator I think that I would also recommend in terms of how it works, just be aware that if you're sensitive to scents then this one might not be up your street.  They're also currently on offer at mypure.

EDIT - Not long after I drafted the main body of the review I started having reactions to potassium sorbate (in another product).  Unfortunately the cleanser contains this, so I chose to stop using it.

Have you tried anything by Kosmea?
Would you be put off from using an otherwise good product jut because of its scent?
Let me know down below!

  1. I came across this brand as they entered the FFS awards. I find the price point a little steep but one could argue it is in line with high end brands like Antipodes but perhaps not so much in terms of performance from your review :)

    1. I agree, I dithered over my thoughts on the price. I think when I really like a product and its performance I will spend that little bit extra, but for me these wouldn't be on a purchase list. Did you like any that you tried? x

  2. Ah such a shame about the potassium sorbate in it..not having much luck are you! The scrub looks a little scratchy - it might be better as a body scrub? :) x

    1. That's a great idea, especially as it reminded me so much of the NYR Seaweed Body scrub! Thanks Amber :) x
