11/11/14: Marshmallow Love (Freedom Confectionery) [+ giveaway]

When I first came across the Freedommallows I couldn't wait to get my hands on them.  Cue lots of excitement when in my first The Vegan Kind box they included a pack of their first release, the Vanilla Mallow.   Almost a year later and they've gone from strength to strength and now feature in many shops across the country, including (most importantly :P) my local health food store.

Starting out with just the vanilla flavour in a regular size, they now also produce a strawberry flavour and a mini size (also available in catering quantities... how do I get my hands on one of those bags?).  And this month they have rebranded from Freedommallows to Freedom Confectionery and given the bags a fresh new look while keeping the sugary goodness inside the same.

Gone are the pastel pinks and yellows and now we have bright pink, blue and orange.  I had nothing against the old packaging, but these definitely catch your eye and look fresh and appealing.  Also gone are the bunnies and in their place is Cedric the Sloth.  Louise from Freedom Confectionery told me:  "We had a lot of feedback that having rabbits on our packaging made a lot of people think it was an Easter product so we decided to change and go with a sloth (whom we have now named ‘Cedric’ thanks to our competition winner Sophie Swallow). Sloths are a favourite among our team as they seem quite loveable creatures and have great little personalities."  So although at first I wondered why they'd chosen a lazy animal, I can't disagree that they're cute! :)

The range now consists of:  Vanilla (White), Vanilla (Yellow) and Strawberry full size bags, and Vanilla (White) and Vanilla (Pink and White) Mini Marshmallows*. The vanilla full size is available in two colourings:  yellow (apparently Europeans prefer curcumin colouring) and then a white vanilla.  However, I can confirm, after hours of rigorous testing, that although they look slightly different, they taste just the same.

At the moment both the white and the pink/white mini varieties are vanilla flavoured - I really hope that they start making minis of the strawberry too in future, as the full size are so delicious.  The minis were great to top a hot chocolate and if I'd managed to keep them in the house long enough I think they would have done a great Rocky Road.  There is a healthy amount in each bag, and I love the fluffy squish they have.  Definitely looking forward to seeing more of these around.

Good for me?
Yes.  Yes they are.  My only niggle would be that the minis are both vanilla - I would have loved the pink/white bag to be strawberry and vanilla.  But as you might notice, I am still obsessed with these and buy a bag whenever and whenever I can.  At £2.50 a bag they aren't cheap compared to your bog-standard animal gelatine filled mallow, but as someone that has missed marshmallow for quite a while having this alternative is worth its weight in gold and silver.

Good for you?
If you're a vegan, vegetarian, or just someone that appreciates good mallow, then you should pick up a bag.   (As well as being certified by both the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society they're also nut and gluten free!) They can be found in stores such as Holland and Barrett and are also distributed by Suma Wholefoods, so if your local health store stocks Suma products, there is a good chance that they do/could stock Freedom Mallows.

Make sure to keep your eyes peeled, as there is also a completely new product in the pipeline, due to be announced in the run up to Christmas.  I for one, am very excited to see (and taste!) what comes next for Freedom Confectionery.

And finally... Freedom Confectionery have very very kindly offered to share the love with not one, not two, but THREE lucky winners! Three of you could win the prize bundle pictured below. (I am all over that tote bag!)  To enter, just fill out the Rafflecopter below.  Good luck!  (UK residents only).
